The evening starts the fall as our weary traveller arrives at the Forbidden Forest. Rumours are that no one has ever returned from the forest after entering it at night. Myths and fables our hero laughed them away. He was destined to find the secret hidden within.

Through the wilderness and the thick fog he travelled. He had been here for hours already and was starting to get tired. His legs heavy and desperately in need of a rest.

In the distance he saw a light. A voice calling. Sweet whispers in his ears were fooling him. Dragging him closer and closer. Suddenly the Mystic Mansion doomed up from the swamp. His earlier laughter turned into silence. Fear took over his body making him freeze.

Until the sound of a laughing squirrel was blasted from the speakers. Something went wrong with the soundscape. It must be the one from another ride in the park.

The park technician arrives and asks if someone from the crowd could make a new soundscape for the playlist. You volunteer and get your iPad out.

Any sound can be captured and enhanced for learning with GarageBand.

The Steps.

Here is my story:

Open GarageBand and start a new project by tapping on the plus sign at the upper right hand corner.

Select the Audio Recorder because we are going to record sounds from different objects.

TIP: Find different object of different fabrics and lay them out on a table in front of you. Experiment with their sound by banging them together or on different surfaces.

Tap on Voice.

Turn the metronome off in the upper right hand corner.

Tap on the red recording button and record your sound.

Repeat this step for all your sounds need for the soundscape. Make sure the sound makes sense for the story or scene.

TIP: Experiment with filters and your voice to create a unique sound.

GarageBand comes with a whole library of sound effects already. Let’s explore some.

Tap on the loop sign at the upper right hand corner.

Tap on Genre and select Sound Effects.

Search the library for effects that can be used to enhance your soundscape. Once you find one, simply drag and drop it in your project.

Listening to your result and share it.

Going Further.

Your soundscape got submitted to the playlist of the Mystic Mansion. Watch and observe how the visitors react to it.

This is one of the activities that educators can participate in during The Playground at FETC and TCEA.
