Rollercoaster.

The Dralion is a dragon of a rollercoaster ride. You can see it rising from the fog when you enter Wonderland. The closer you get, the more you are impressed by this colossus. Taking away your breath and making your hands a little sweaty. The number one ride. Until you arrive…

The owner of the park hands out a wealthy reward for the one visitor that can design a thriller experience. Do you have what it takes to create the ride of a lifetime?

Bring structure to the design thinking process.

The Steps.

Here is my story:

Open Numbers on your iPad and start a new blank template.

First thing we will do is delete the table. Isn’t this a spreadsheet tool I hear you say. Of course, but it is so much more! Your patience will be rewarded once we get to the data section.

Rename your sheet “Brainstorm’ by double tapping it.

Tap on the plus sign at the upper right hand corner and go to the shapes library.

Select a rounded corner shape and start brainstorming.

TIP: Select to bubbles and then go to the shapes library. Tap on the line with the dots to connect your thoughts.

Create a new sheet by tapping on the plus sign on the upper left hand corner and rename it “Resources”. Don’t forget to delete the table.

Gently slide the dock up and drag Safari out.

Now do your research. Once you find a helpful link, drag and drop it into the document.

Create a new sheet again  and rename it “Design”. Delete the table.

Get your Apple pencil out and start drawing your wildest ride.

Create a new sheet again  and rename it “Step-by-step”. Delete the table.

Next tap on the plus sign at the upper right hand corner and add an image gallery from the media section.

Tap on the plus sign of the gallery and take pictures as you construct your roller coaster. LEGO or KNEX are great tools to bring your design to life.

TIP: Write the instructions with each step using the dictation function in your keyboard.

Time to test your creation.

First create a new sheet and rename it “Test Pilot”. Delete the table.

Then tap on the plus sign at the upper right hand corner and select Camera  from the media section.

Ride your roller coaster while recording the process.

This is the time! Your patience is rewarded. We will use a table for collecting all the data on the rides.

So get ahead, create a new sheet and rename it “Data”. Don’t delete the table this time.

Add the required fields. For my example I was interested in duration, speed and the experience.

TIP: Select a cell and tap on the paintbrush to format it. That is how I got the star rating for the experience. Also have a look at the augmented reality app Measure from Apple. It’s a quick and easy measuring tool and it’s free!

To input the data we are going to create a new form. Tap on the plus sign at the upper left hand corner and select “New Form”.

Select your table from the menu and start putting your data in the fields. Watch as your table fills up with new results.

To close this project off we have two more steps ahead of us: reflection and reward.

Create a new sheet and rename it “Reflection”. Delete the table.

Then tap on the plus sign at the upper right hand corner and select Record Audio from the media section.

Reflect on each ride and think about suggestions to improve.

For the final step we need to use all of our creativity and design a logo that is appropriate.

Create a new sheet and rename it “Logo”. Delete the table.

Use the shapes library and the drawing tools to express yourself.

Going Further.

Fingers crossed that your design makes the cut!

This is one of the activities that educators can participate in during The Playground at FETC and TCEA.
